When Vanessa and I exchanged pleasantries and business cards during one of the lunches at She Speaks three years ago, I had no idea God was connecting our lives. Almost immediately after She Speaks, we began emailing one another. Vanessa has been a great source of encouragement and support in my writing. The fifteen minutes we spent together three years ago definitely turned into a friendship!

Like me, the book Vanessa pitched at She Speaks didn’t receive a contract. And like me, she didn’t give up! A “No” from people did not mean a “No” from God, and she was obedient and kept writing. Last month, Vanessa published her first book, Rise Up: Choosing Faith Over Fear in Christian Ministry . Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her book!

And y’all, it is so good!

When God calls us to do anything, I truly believe fear is our first reaction. Look how the chapters address those issues.

I love the way Vanessa addresses the areas where fear can paralyze us. She names our fears, teaches us what God says about them, and she ends each chapter with a prayer specific to that fear.

I recently interviewed Vanessa, and I wanted to share what she said with you.

What is the best piece of advice you have for overcoming your fears?

The best piece of advice I can give for overcoming your fears is to pray, seek God in all you do, continually worship Him (when I get fearful I find it so helpful to sing praises to God), and to be thankful in all circumstances. When we can do these things we will see the fear we have be replaced by the peace of God.

Why do you think women tend to have so much self doubt?

Women like to compare themselves to other women.  When we play this mind game, the self-doubt begins to creep its way into our minds and our hearts.  It makes us doubt God and His calling for us.  It makes us feel like we aren’t good enough because we aren’t like someone else.  We have to get out of this mindset and remember that each of us is special and unique and God will use us, as we are, to spread His name.

How do you know when the Holy Spirit is guiding you?

Have you ever had this overwhelming feeling that you should do something?  That’s the Holy Spirit.  Have you ever read Scripture and felt like it was meant for you?  That’s the Holy Spirit.  Have you ever received the same message in multiple ways?  That’s the Holy Spirit.  These are ways I know the Holy Spirit is guiding me.
